Sandwich Harbour is a place where you have to go or regret it for the rest of your life. Sandwich is only accessible with a good 4 wheel drive vehicle and a fully qualified driver who has lots of experience of the dunes.The Sandwich Harbour tour starts in Walvis Bay with a visit to the flamingos in the lagoon and a stop on the dunes at the Salt Works, to see where the salt comes from that melts the snow in Europe!From there we drive through the Kuiseb Delta where the sight of a Springbok or two is not uncommon and over the salt plains to the Namib Naukluft Park border. Once inside, we drive on the beach to Sandwich Harbour.At Sandwich Harbour lagoon we stop so our clients can take a stroll alongside the lagoon for photos of the birds and beautiful nature scenes.On our way back we visit a viewpoint on the dunes to look down on the lagoon, from where we drive for approx. 6km through the dunes back to the border.
Sandwich Harbour is a lagoon on the Atlanic coast of Namibia, south from Walvis Bay, within the Namib-Naukluft National Park.Formaly a commerial port based around whaling and small scale fishing,it declined as the harbour silted up, and is now best known for its birdlife, which can be as many as 250 000 .Although called Sandwich Harbour, it was never a harbour or even a port, it is a shallow lagoon lying about 80km south of Walvis Bay.THE TOUR:Experience the adventure and beauty of exploring the Namib desert with your guide. A full day 4x4 adventure trip departing from Walvis Bay at 08H30( pick up from location requested ) to the Sandwich Harbour Area after a short break at the Walvis Bay Lagoon to view some flamingoes and salt works, you will proceed to the Kuiseb river delta, a dry riverbed where the odd springbok may be seen. Beautiful dunes will have to be crossed to get to Sandwich Harbour. If weather and tides allow, you will drive right to the Sandwich Harbour Lagoon, one of Southern Africa’s richest and unique wetlands. If our vehicles cannot drive all along the beach to get to Sandwich Harbour because of the tides, you will get a chance to see the lagoon area from one of our many beautiful lookout spots and will have the time to walk and explore the Sandwich Harbour Area. Lots of time are granted for photograph. A light picnic lunch with some cold beverages in the breathtaking scenery can be expected before returning through the dunes for some more adventure.
Sandwich Harbour is a natural untouched beauty that many has heard about, but very few have ever gotten the opportunity to visit. The first stop is at a point along the lagoon where the masses of flamingoes can be viewed. A short drive further we ascend the well known Salt pan dune to the east of the Salt works to show the clients a top view of the alluring “pink water” in the salt pans.We continue our tour and eventually enter the Namib Naukluft Park at the northern border where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. A drive along the beach follows where the occasional Seal or Jackal is observed close to the beach. This drive brings us to the point where sand and sea meets and tides permitting we will enter towards Sandwich Harbour. If the tide is high we enter the dunes and drive to a high point where Sandwich Harbour can be seen from the top of the dunes along the Ocean. An exciting drive through the dunes follows where the magnificent splendor of the dunes of the Namib surrounds us.
Allow us to show you the natural splendor of Sandwich Harbour where the dunes meet the ocean!Only accessible by 4x4, our experienced guides will take you on an exhilarating ride through the dunes and show you the wonders of the Namib Desert.The tour will take you south along the Namibian coastline starting at the Walvis Bay lagoon, a Ramsar site, which boasts a diverse bird life including masses of flamingos. From there we depart into the Namib Naukluft Park, the largest game park in Africa and the 4th largest in the world where you will enter the dunes of Sandwich Harbour. Your guide will make numerous strategic stops for you to enjoy the scenery and provide plenty of opportunities for spectacular photographs. You will also enjoy a refreshment break where you will be served with drinks and hearty snacks, surrounded by the beauty of sand and sea.
You will be picked up at your guesthouse in Swakopmund/Walvis Bay. We then depart for Sandwich Harbour, about 50 km south of Walvis Bay where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy an exciting day filled with adventure and exploring the beautiful sites of Sandwich Harbour. En-Route we will also stop at the Walvis Bay Lagoon, pass by the Walvis Bay Salt Refinery and many popular spots for the avid birder. A yummy light lunch and cool drinks will be served at a beautiful spot in the dunes for your refreshment. Enjoy a little bit of dune belt driving upon return with the chance to spot Ostrich, Springbuck or Jackal. End this day with a story to tell and memories to take back home.
Our Tour takes us onto the harsh gravel plains of the Namib Desert and learn how Plants and animals have adapted to this hostile condition. how plants and animals survive of the moisture of the Fog, to formation of the Moonlandscape and how the age old Welwitschia Plants grow.... then past Dune 7 into Walvisbay to the wetland and onto the beautiful and stunning Sandwich Harbour dunes....
